The University of Zaragoza experienced this Thursday an afternoon of tension and police charges during the protests called against the visit of Vito Quiles to the San Francisco campus. Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Faculty of Law to reject the event announced by the far-right agitator, despite the fact that the academic institution had communicated that it did not have authorization to hold it.
According to El Periódico de Aragón, the incidents occurred around 7:15 PM, when participants in the antifascist concentration encountered a group of supporters of Quiles carrying Spanish flags. Both groups began to exchange insults and the National Police intervened to separate them, with police charges and the use of pepper spray.

The protest had begun at 6:00 PM next to the pond on campus, an hour before the call from Quiles. The attendees, mobilized by the Antifascist Coordinator of Zaragoza, have gathered under the watch of a police device made up of several riot vans and a helicopter.
"Vito Quiles is missing, we are not all here"
During the concentration, the protesters chanted slogans against Quiles' presence at the university. Among them, "Where is Vito Quiles?" and "Vito Quiles is missing, we are not all here," according to the Aragonese newspaper.
Shouts of "They shall not pass," "Here are the antifascists," and demands in favor of the freedom of those known as the six from Zaragoza were also heard.
The mobilization initially took place in front of the security device deployed in the vicinity of the Faculty of Law. However, the encounter between the protesters and the attendees of Quiles' call heightened the tension, leading to the intervention of the agents.
For the moment, the available information does not allow confirming a balance of injured or detained as a result of the incidents.
The University of Zaragoza had rejected the event
Quiles' visit had generated controversy since the beginning of the week. The agitator announced a call in front of the Faculty of Law for this Thursday at 7:00 PM, as part of his tour of events at different Spanish universities.
However, the University of Zaragoza confirmed that it had not authorized the activity. The institution defended the need to preserve its neutrality ahead of the upcoming general elections on November 29 and reminded that its facilities must be dedicated to teaching, research, and university coexistence.
The rectorate also warned that the campuses should not be used as spaces for electoral mobilization nor be institutionally associated with political candidacies.
Despite this refusal, Quiles announced that he would go ahead with his call in the vicinity of the faculty. For its part, the Antifascist Coordinator called for a gathering an hour earlier to express its rejection of the visit.
Quiles responds to the protesters from his social media
While the protest was taking place, Vito Quiles himself reacted through X with a message directed at the participants in the concentration.
..."These, just to avoid going to class, sign up for anything. How outrageous," wrote the agitator, according to El Periódico de Aragón.
At the moment when that publication was disseminated, Quiles had still not appeared on campus, according to the newspaper's information. It had also not been confirmed whether he would finally be able to hold the announced event.
New incidents after the protests in Pamplona and Barcelona
The clashes in Zaragoza come after other episodes of tension related to Quiles' university tour.
On October 15, his call in Pamplona ended with riots, police charges, and at least one arrest. The intervention of the security forces occurred during the clashes between protesters opposed to his presence and attendees of the call.
Four days later, on Monday, October 19, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) was the scene of a new protest. The Mossos d'Esquadra deployed a device to prevent Quiles' access, whose event had also not been authorized by the university.
During that day, objects were thrown at the agents and police charges occurred. Finally, Quiles did not access the campus and moved to the vicinity of an Ikea establishment in Sabadell, where he had called his supporters.
Zaragoza thus becomes the third consecutive stop of his university tour accompanied by protests and police intervention, in the midst of the pre-campaign for the general elections on November 29.
