The countdown for the return to school 2026-2027 has already begun. The autonomous communities have been publishing their official calendars and, as happens every year, there is no single date for the start of classes in Spain.

The differences do not only occur between communities. Some administrations set different dates for Infant and Primary, ESO, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training, while others leave some margin to the educational centers themselves, provinces, or municipalities.

Madrid will start classes on September 7 for the second cycle of Infant, Primary, and Special Education, while ESO, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training will return on the 8th. Galicia has set September 9 as the general start date and Balearic Islands on the 10th. Navarra, on the other hand, allows Infant and Primary to start between September 4 and 8 depending on the calendar of each center.

When does the school year 2026-2027 start in Madrid

The Community of Madrid will be one of the first to start classes. Students of the second cycle of Infant Education, Primary, and Special Education will begin on Monday, September 7, 2026, according to the calendar published by the Department of Education.

Students of ESO, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training will join a day later, on Tuesday, September 8. The school activity of the main stages will end on June 18, 2027.

The Christmas holidays in Madrid will extend from December 23, 2026, to January 10, 2027, while the non-teaching period of Holy Week will be from March 19 to 29, 2027.

Andalusia: Infant and Primary on the 10th and ESO on the 15th of September

The school calendar of Andalusia for 2026-2027 again establishes two major dates for the return to the classrooms. The second cycle of Infant, Primary, and Special Education will begin on September 10, 2026.

Students of ESO, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training will start classes on September 15. The special regime language teachings will do so later, according to the provincial calendars.

The Andalusian calendar must also be completed with the non-teaching days determined by each province and with the local holidays corresponding to each municipality, so there may be territorial differences within the community itself.

Asturias starts on September 9

In Asturias, the classes for children from 3 to 6 years old, Primary, Special Education, ESO, and Baccalaureate will begin on September 9, 2026, according to the resolution of the Department of Education published in the BOPA.

Vocational Training and some artistic teachings will start on September 14, while other special regime teachings will have later dates. For children, Primary, ESO, and Baccalaureate, the last school day will be June 23, 2027.

The Christmas holidays will take place from December 23 to January 10, while the Easter break will be from March 22 to March 28. Asturias also incorporates other common non-school days during November, February, and spring.

Galicia returns to the classrooms on September 9

Galicia has established September 9, 2026, as the start of the 2026-2027 school year for the main educational stages. The end of classes is generally set for June 21, 2027.

The measure affects children, Primary, ESO, and Baccalaureate, although certain courses of Vocational Training may have specific calendars related to their academic organization.

The Galician calendar also establishes the Christmas and Easter holidays and maintains its own days such as those corresponding to Entroido, which are added to national, regional, and local holidays.

Balearic Islands will start the school year on September 10

The 2026-2027 school year in the Balearic Islands will begin on September 10, 2026, and will end on June 18, 2027 for children, Primary, ESO, Baccalaureate, and Special Education.

Vocational Training presents some differences in its start dates, and certain levels will begin later. The calendar for basic teachings will have 176 school days.

The Christmas holidays in the Balearic Islands will be from December 23, 2026, to January 6, 2027, while the Easter holidays will extend from March 25 to April 4, 2027.

Extremadura starts on September 10

The official Extremaduran calendar sets September 10, 2026 as the start of children, Primary, Special Education, ESO, and a large part of Vocational Training. Baccalaureate will start on September 11.

The Christmas holidays will be from December 23, 2026, to January 7, 2027 and Easter will extend from March 22 to March 29, 2027. Additionally, February 8 and 9 will be non-school days due to Carnival.

The end of the course changes depending on the teachings. For example, certain cycles of vocational training conclude earlier, while for compulsory stages the calendar extends until June.

La Rioja: classes from September 9

The 2026-2027 school year in La Rioja will start on September 9, 2026, and will end on June 22, 2027 in general. This is established by the resolution published in the Official Bulletin of La Rioja.

The Christmas holidays will extend from December 23 to January 6, while Holy Week will be from March 25 to April 4, both periods included.

The municipalities may also incorporate local days. This means that the final number and distribution of days without classes may present small differences depending on the locality in which the center is located.

Navarra will allow starting between September 4 and 8

Navarra is one of the territories where it is especially important not to talk about a single date for returning to school. The Education Department itself indicates that each center approves its calendar within the general conditions established by the Administration.

In the second cycle of Early Childhood Education, Primary, and Special Education, classes must start between September 4 and 8, 2026. Secondary Education and Baccalaureate will begin on the 4th. In vocational training, Basic Degree starts on the 4th, Intermediate Degree on the 11th, and the first year of Higher Degree on the 16th.

The Christmas holidays will be from December 23 to January 10 and Holy Week will be from March 25 to April 4. For Early Childhood Education and Primary, the end of classes must be between June 18 and 22.

Basque Country: each center prepares its calendar

The Basque Country also does not set a single identical date for all schools. The resolution for public centers of Early Childhood Education and Primary establishes that teaching activities cannot begin before September 7, 2026.

Centers must prepare their calendar guaranteeing a minimum of 175 school days and 875 hours of direct teaching. In Early Childhood Education and Primary, classes must end no later than June 18, 2027.

For this reason, Basque families must consult the specific date of their school or institute before planning the return to classes. The Education Department publishes differentiated resolutions for Early Childhood Education and Primary, Secondary, Baccalaureate, vocational training, and other teachings.

Castilla y León starts from September 9

The official calendar of Castilla y León establishes September 9, 2026 as the start for the second cycle of Early Childhood, Primary, and Special Education, although there are different dates for other teachings.

The Christmas holidays will be from December 23 to January 10, while Holy Week will extend from March 20 to March 30, 2027.

The end is also not the same for all stages. Early Childhood, Primary, Special Education, and ESO will finish on June 24, while the first year of Bachillerato and some vocational training teachings conclude earlier.

Comunitat Valenciana sets the start for September 9

The Comunitat Valenciana has established September 9, 2026 as the start of the school year for Early Childhood, Primary, ESO, and Bachillerato. The date appears in the calendar approved by the Conselleria de Educación for 2026-2027.

The general completion of these teachings is set for June 18, 2027, although there may be particularities in certain special regime teachings.

To the general dates, regional and local holidays must be added, so certain municipalities may incorporate additional non-teaching days.

Aragón starts classes from September 8

Aragón has already published its official school calendar 2026-2027, which establishes different start dates depending on the type of teaching. The first levels start to incorporate from September 8, 2026.

The Aragonese Administration itself details in its calendar the specific dates for the different teachings, so vocational training and certain educational levels may start on different days.

The distribution of holidays must also be completed with the corresponding provincial and local festivities, a circumstance that may introduce variations among centers in the three provinces.

Canarias has its own calendar by teachings

Canarias has an official Resolution of March 17, 2026 that establishes the calendar for the 2026-2027 school year for non-university teachings. The regulation sets the specific dates for incorporation and completion according to each educational level.

The resolution establishes that the school year begins administratively on September 1, 2026 and ends on August 31, 2027, while the ordinary activities of the centers take place from September 1 to June 30. The specific teaching dates depend on the education.

In addition, when the established day to start classes coincides with an island or municipal holiday, the start is moved to the first following school day.

Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia: attention to territorial calendars

In Castilla-La Mancha there is a specific regional order, Order 79/2026, but the Junta also publishes provincial resolutions for Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, and Toledo. For this reason, non-school days and certain particularities must be checked in the calendar of each province.

The Region of Murcia also has an official section dedicated to the school calendar and the dates may present differences related to the teachings and the municipal scope. Therefore, it is not precise to attribute a single start date to all Murcian students without specifying municipality and stage.

In both cases, before organizing family trips or vacations, it is advisable to consult the calendar corresponding to the center and locality, in addition to the regional and national holidays.

Local holidays can change the school calendar

The school calendar 2026-2027 does not end with the dates approved by each community. The periods of Christmas and Holy Week include national, regional, local holidays, and certain non-teaching days approved by the educational administrations.

This explains why two students from the same community may have different free days during the school year. Navarra expressly allows each center to create its own calendar, Castilla-La Mancha has provincial resolutions, and La Rioja allows the incorporation of local days.

Therefore, the regional dates serve as a general reference, but the definitive calendar of the school or institute is the one that must be consulted to know all the days without class for the 2026-2027 school year.
