The operation that the mayor of Santa Cruz de Bezana, Carmen Pérez (PP), has undergone after the traffic accident suffered last Monday, which caused her a broken and displaced cervical vertebra, has transpired "favorably" and the mayor continues her recovery, which is also evolving "positively".

This has been communicated by the City Council of Bezana in an official note, in which it specifies that, while the mayor's convalescence period lasts, the first deputy mayor, Manuela Bolado (Vox), will assume the responsibilities of acting mayor. Thus, along with the rest of the government team, it is intended to ensure that institutional activity continues normally.

Regarding the other two occupants of the car in which the mayor was traveling —who were injured to a lesser extent and also form part of the municipal staff— they have already been discharged and are at home starting their recovery process, according to the City Council.

The family of Pérez and the members of the government team have expressed their gratitude for the numerous displays of affection, support, and concern received in recent days.

Likewise, they have shown their gratitude to the citizens for their understanding and respect for the privacy of the mayor and her close ones throughout this process.

Despite the "hard blow" that this event has meant for the government team, all its members have reiterated their commitment to ensure that municipal management continues to develop normally.

The mayor was seriously injured after the incident that occurred last Monday on the A-67 highway, at the height of Bezana. Following the accident, and due to the broken and displaced cervical vertebra she presented, she was surgically intervened on Tuesday morning at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital in Santander.

Pérez was traveling in the back of the vehicle and was returning from a meeting about the eclipse with other municipalities in Santander when the car she was in was stopped on the road due to a breakdown and was hit from behind by a delivery van.

In the front and passenger seats were the chief of the Police of Bezana and a municipal technician, who suffered various bruises, although the most affected was the mayor.
