The Catania-Fontanarossa airport, on the Italian island of Sicily, maintains this Tuesday the interruption of its air operations until 14:30 due to a new eruption of Etna, after it was already forced to close its airspace yesterday.
"Due to the emissions of volcanic ash, the closure of sectors B3 and C1 has been extended, which causes the suspension of flights until 14:30," according to SAC, the operator of the Italian air center.
In the same informational note, the airport manager has asked travelers to check directly with their airlines the status of their connections before traveling to the facilities, and has also indicated that it will provide "more updates" in the coming hours.
This new episode of activity from Etna adds to the significant incidents recorded last August, when hundreds of flights were canceled or diverted during the peak summer season.
