The strong reactivation of Mount Etna has forced the closure of airspace in sectors C1 and B3, which has led to the complete suspension of operations at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport.
According to the latest official statement issued by the managing company Società Aeroporto Catania, the presence of volcanic ash at high altitude has made both takeoffs and landings of aircraft unfeasible.
The limitations on air traffic, which affect the main connection hub of Sicily and the fifth busiest airport in Italy, will remain in effect at least until 10:00 PM (local time).
The airport management recommends that passengers check the status of their flights with their airlines before going to the terminal, and assures that new communications will be issued as weather and volcanic conditions change.
This new episode of instability in the most active volcano in Europe adds to the serious incidents recorded last month, when hundreds of flights were canceled or diverted during the peak holiday season.
