The Government collaborates closely with Talgo in the search for international partners with which to seal strategic alliances that allow reinforcing its activity and increasing its train manufacturing capacity, with the goal of being able to meet all the orders that the company currently has in its portfolio.
This was explained by the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, in an interview with "Bloomberg", where the possibility of an alliance with a Polish company is mentioned within the framework of the conversations being held with potential new partners.
The State is among the main shareholders of Talgo, after the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI) purchased at the end of 2025 a package equivalent to 7.9% of the company's capital.
The Executive's interest in the future of the railway manufacturer based in Álava is also supported by the needs of Renfe, the public train operator, which must incorporate new rolling stock to cope with the expected increase in demand for the coming years.
In this context, Renfe has personally suffered the consequences of Talgo's limited industrial capacity, which continues to accumulate delays in the delivery of several trains purchased years ago and which have already resulted, for the moment, in a penalty of 116 million euros imposed by Renfe for the breach of delivery deadlines.
For this reason, the Ministry of Transport is working alongside Talgo in the search for alternatives that allow overcoming this production bottleneck, among which is a possible alliance with a Polish company. Sources from the Ministry consulted by Europa Press refuse to provide more details about these conversations.
Last year, during the negotiation for the sale of Talgo, the Polish train manufacturer Pesa, controlled by the PFR fund, expressed its interest in acquiring the Spanish company at a price of 5 euros per share, a proposal that ultimately did not materialize.
However, prior to that purchase attempt, Pesa and Talgo had already signed an agreement to analyze cooperation formulas in the development of the new high-speed and very high-speed railway network in Poland.
