The PSOE rejected this Wednesday in Congress the initiative of Podemos that proposed the creation of a public supermarket and the limitation of profit margins of large food distributors, with special attention to products considered basic or essential.
These two measures were part of a motion resulting from an urgent interpellation directed at the first vice president and minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, debated in the previous Plenary.
In both proposals, both in setting a cap on business margins and in launching a public supermarket, the socialists voted against. Sumar, the minority partner of the Government, opted in this case for abstention. Neither of the two has moved forward due to the rejection also expressed by PP, Vox, and Junts, which together hold an absolute majority.
Abstention in the face of the decree reduction of rents
The motion also included other economic measures that Podemos has been advocating for some time, including legally reducing all rents by 40% compared to current prices. In this vote, both PSOE and Sumar abstained, and the proposal also did not achieve sufficient support from the Chamber.
The coalition Government has also abstained on other initiatives that have not reached the necessary majority, such as the expropriation of illegal tourist housing in the hands of large owners, the implementation of a state plan for free and reusable school materials, and the guarantee of universal access to diverse, durable, reusable, and sustainable pedagogical materials.
