The spokesperson for ERC in Congress and top of the list for Barcelona for the general elections on November 29, Gabriel Rufián, has assured this Friday that Pedro Sánchez "is being persecuted" in the courts, although he has rejected that the head of government use that circumstance to justify the corruption cases affecting the PSOE. "High-ranking officials of the PSOE are in jail in Soto del Real," he recalled during an appearance to the media in Madrid.
Rufián made these statements before presenting his book How to win over the fascists at the headquarters of UGT. The Republican leader described as "absolutely miserable" the judicial proceedings opened around Begoña Gómez, the president's wife, and her brother, but he insisted that this situation does not exempt the PSOE from responding for the corruption cases affecting former party officials.
Rufián finds it credible that the PP offered money to Koldo García
Asked about the alleged offer of one million euros from the PP to Koldo García in exchange for information against the Government, Rufián said that it reminds him of "mafia practices" and has considered it credible that money was offered to obtain certain information.
"I have been in Congress for ten years and I have been on all the investigative commissions, and all of them have had to do with some wrongdoing by the Partido Popular," he said.
His words come in the middle of the election campaign and after the latest judicial developments related to the Koldo case, which have reignited the standoff between the Government and the opposition over investigations into corruption.
Criticism of Adif after the investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office
Rufián also commented on the investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into alleged fraud related to funds intended to renew and improve safety on the high-speed rail line Madrid-Seville, where on October 28 the Urda (Toledo) rail accident occurred, leaving 69 dead.
The ERC candidate questioned the operation of Adif and its reliance on external companies. As he has denounced, it is "a public company, but full of subcontractors" that receive large amounts of money and "precaritize above all maintenance."
Self-criticism on the left over housing and political communication
During the presentation of How to beat the fascists, Rufián has argued that the left must pay more attention to social networks in order to reach citizens. "Today we do politics for social networks too," he explained, before noting that many people consult their phone when they get back from work and that he tries to reach them through his videos.
The Republican spokesperson has also called for reflection on the problems that the left has not managed to solve, especially access to housing. In his view, the left has "failed when it comes to housing", a circumstance that he considers relevant for understanding the growth of the far right.
Rufián has rejected that this progress be explained only by an increase in far-right convictions. In his opinion, there is "a lot of neutral" and a part of the working class that has "misdirected hate" and ends up "blaming someone else poorer than you for how poor you are instead of looking up."
