Pedro Sánchez promised this Monday to reform the Constitution to safeguard pensions and guarantee their revaluation according to the CPI during the next legislature. The president of the Government and PSOE candidate made this commitment at a rally in Gijón, where he also criticized Alberto Núñez Feijóo for his electoral pact with Vox in the Senate and asked Spaniards for an absolute majority of 176 deputies to govern without depending on other parties.
"In the next legislature we will reform the Constitution to safeguard pensions and their revaluation according to the CPI", he announced before about 3,000 people gathered at the Luis Adaro fairgrounds, while another 3,000 followed the event from outside, according to the organization's data. Sánchez asked voters to think of their relatives when they go to the polls on November 29, especially parents, mothers, and grandparents who, after a lifetime of work, deserve to receive a dignified pension.
The Constitution already obliges public authorities to guarantee adequate and periodically updated pensions, but it does not expressly include their revaluation according to the CPI, which is currently regulated by law. The PSOE proposal would mean incorporating that guarantee into the constitutional text, although to approve it, a reinforced majority in the Cortes Generales would be needed.
Sánchez equates voting for the PP with voting for Vox
The electoral agreement between the PP and Vox to run for the Senate has also occupied a good part of the president's speech, who used the pact to warn of the consequences of a right-wing victory on November 29.
"Voting for Feijóo is the same as voting for Abascal. I don't say it, they say it with their pact in the Senate", Sánchez stated, who compared the position of the popular party with that of other European conservative formations that refuse to collaborate with the far right.
The socialist candidate expressly mentioned the case of Germany and accused the leader of the PP of having broken with that tradition. "Feijóo has rolled back the democratic right 50 years. We will not allow them to do the same with Spain", he warned.
"If Brazil could, Spain can"
The recent victory of Lula da Silva in the presidential elections in Brazil has become another of Sánchez's major electoral arguments, who has insisted that the PSOE can repeat the comeback of the Brazilian leader in the general elections on November 29.
"Feel proud to be the Gallic village in Europe and the light among so much gloom in the world. If Brazil could, Spain can. On November 29, hope will defeat regression, voting for the PSOE", he proclaimed before an audience that responded with shouts of "Yes, we can!".
Sánchez has defended that Spain has become an international reference for the left and has linked the visits of far-right leaders, such as Javier Milei, with the political importance he attributes to the socialist government. "We are the irrefutable proof that hope is more efficient than hate in advancing societies", he assured.
The president has also revived the message of optimism he launched after learning the Brazilian result. "We are going to do the same as Lula in Brazil", he insisted, convinced that socialists can turn around the electoral forecasts.
176 deputies to govern without relying on agreements
Beyond defending a new victory for the PSOE, Sánchez has directly asked voters for an absolute majority that allows him to govern without the parliamentary difficulties of recent years.
"I ask you, after eight years in which we have governed with very fragmented parliamentary majorities, imagine if on November 29 the Spaniards give the PSOE 176 seats to govern and advance Spain. That is what we ask for", he stated.
The figure of 176 deputies represents the absolute majority of Congress, made up of 350 seats. With this request, Sánchez has raised his electoral aspirations and has defended the possibility of governing with a majority of his own after two legislatures in which he has needed agreements with other political forces.
Mass bath of the PSOE in Gijón
The rally has served to support the socialist candidacy for Asturias, led by Adriana Lastra, who shared the stage with Sánchez, the president of the Principality and secretary general of the FSA, Adrián Barbón, and Lara Martínez, PSOE candidate for the Gijón mayoralty in the 2027 municipal elections.
The president's visit to Asturias began in the morning at the facilities of Astilleros Armón, where he learned about a new ferry from Baleària with completely electric propulsion. He also included in his agenda a visit to the public nursery school Los Nuberinos, before participating in the socialist pre-campaign event.
