The Ministry of the Interior has launched new selective processes to incorporate, through the general system of free access, 35 nursing professionals and 70 physicians in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Psychiatry destined for the penitentiary centers throughout the national territory.
As detailed this Tuesday in the Official State Bulletin (BOE), the calls to fill these positions must be resolved within a maximum period of two years from their publication in the BOE, while the different phases of the opposition must be completed within a year.
In the case of nursing staff, 35 positions of subgroup A2 are offered. People with Spanish nationality, nationals of EU member states, their spouses, as well as those included in the scope of application of the International Treaties ratified by Spain may apply.
The opposition phase for these nursing positions will include three eliminatory exercises, with which it will be verified that the candidates have the necessary theoretical and practical preparation to assume the functions of the Corps of Nurses of Penitentiary Institutions.
In addition, it will be essential to have the title of University Diploma or Degree in Nursing to participate in the process.
70 positions for physicians in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Psychiatry
In parallel, the Interior has called for 70 positions of subgroup A1 for physicians. Of these, 40 are part of this year's public employment offer, with 35 positions aimed at Family and Community Medicine and Internal Medicine and five for Psychiatry.
The other thirty vacancies come from positions that remained unfilled in the employment offers of 2024 and 2025. In total, these 30 are distributed into 20 for Family and Community Medicine and Internal Medicine and 10 for Psychiatry.
Among the required qualifications, candidates must have a degree in Medicine or a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery. In addition, it will be mandatory to possess the title of Specialist Doctor in Family and Community Medicine and Internal Medicine to apply for these positions, and the title of Psychiatry to apply for those in this specialty.
As is the case with nursing vacancies, those who have Spanish nationality, nationals of EU member states, their spouses, and persons included in the scope of application of the International Treaties ratified by Spain may apply.
This call is published after repeated demands for reinforcement of healthcare personnel in prisons by various unions. In this line, just five days ago, CSIF reported that "76% of the medical positions in Madrid's prisons are unfilled."
Similarly, the Asturian union ACAIP-UGT warned at the beginning of October that the lack of doctors in the Principality's prison exceeded "60%, with three doctors for 1,167 inmates."
