The social movement that drives the camping for housing in Palma claims that the parties represented in the Parlament, where the General Policy Debate continues this Wednesday, "turn their backs on the street."

In a statement, the collective asserts that the initiatives being proposed by the institutions do not respond to the real needs of the citizens and reproaches public officials for prioritizing the interests of property owners and the real estate business over those of tenants.

"We see a big difference between the political debate that the institutions have and the real debate that is happening on the street," indicated the spokespeople of the camping, who claim to have verified this in the assemblies held in various neighborhoods of the city.

In a scenario where housing "is becoming a luxury" and "the situations of residential exclusion and evictions are multiplying," the movement demands that the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, "start listening to the population and stop listening to business and real estate interests."

The spokespeople emphasize that they are not linked to any party and underline the relevance of popular self-organization. "We want the population to take back the direction of politics and not leave it in the hands of institutions that are not focusing on where they really should," they have stated.

Preparations for the strike and continuity of the camping

The camping is now entering its fourth week of protest and its members are readjusting shifts to ensure that the mobilization is sustained over time, balancing their presence in the camp with work, family, and personal responsibilities.

In this new phase, the collective wants to maintain the camp while also reinforcing its presence in the neighborhoods, progressively shifting part of its work towards neighborhood assemblies and the organization of the general strike.

The goal is to keep the camping, at a minimum, until the celebration of said strike, scheduled for November 11, and then decide whether to continue, with the option of extending it until the general elections on November 29.

"We need to be increasingly organized and confront political actions that are causing an ever-greater precarization of access to housing and the working class," they concluded from the camping.
