The Armed Forces of Colombia communicated this Sunday the death of a soldier, identified as Luis David Arrieta Osorio, after an attack carried out with a drone loaded with explosives and attributed to the guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN).
"In the hours of the night of October 10, 2026, during the development of military operations in the sector of Altamira, municipality of La Vega, Cauca, troops of the Mountain Battalion No. 4 were attacked by the launching of explosive devices from an unmanned aerial system type drone," the Army explained in a statement.
As a result of this "terrorist action" that is preliminarily attributed to the ELN, "our professional soldier Luis David Arrieta Osorio was murdered, who was fulfilling his duty in service of the country and the communities of this region of the department of Cauca."
The Army has denounced that the use of drones to launch explosives "violates the norms of international humanitarian law and represents a serious risk both for the members of the Public Force and for the civilian population living in this area."
