Polish authorities reported this Friday the arrest of a Russian citizen suspected of carrying out "espionage" tasks on railway infrastructure in the Lower Silesia region, in the south of the country, allegedly in the service of Russia's intelligence services.

In a statement, the regional Police said that the images captured by the 55-year-old man "could be used against the security of the State", and specified that he was arrested "while taking photographs of trains and railway infrastructure in Swidnica".

"After analyzing the data stored on the devices that the man had in his possession, the agents found hundreds of thousands of files of a similar nature: photographic documentation of various locations and critical transport infrastructures, not only in Poland", the police force detailed.

The security forces have also stressed that the detainee will remain in pretrial detention for at least three months, while the investigations into his activities continue, for which he could face a sentence of a minimum of five years in prison if he is ultimately formally charged and found guilty by a Polish court.
