A Guatemalan citizen, identified as José Chajón-Raxón, has lost his life while being held in a detention center of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of New Jersey, becoming the third migrant person to die in such facilities due to medical complications.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security and cited by the newspaper "The New York Times," Chajón-Raxón was arrested by ICE agents and transferred to the Delaney Hall detention center in mid-July.
This center, managed by Geo Group, a private prison services company that operates numerous detention centers in the United States, is under scrutiny from human rights advocacy organizations. Criticism has intensified following the deaths, in ICE custody, of a Salvadoran citizen identified as Edwin López-Cornejo and another Haitian named Jean Wilson Brutus.
The leader of the Democratic minority in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, has denounced "the unsanitary living conditions" endured by detained individuals, pointing out that they often do not receive necessary medical attention, even in the case of pregnant women.
Likewise, Democratic Congressman from New Jersey, Rob Menendez, has criticized in a statement shared on social media that ICE is trying to "evade responsibility" for the deaths that occurred both on American streets during operations against irregular immigration and in the detention centers spread across the country.
"ICE, in line with the ideology of the Trump Administration, is determined to avoid public scrutiny and not take any responsibility for its failures. It has deliberately reversed a Biden-era policy to create a legal loophole that allows it to 'release' someone from custody and then claim it has no responsibility to investigate their death or to inform Congress or the public," he has indicated.
