The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Tuesday that he has held a meeting with the Iranian delegation sent to New York for the UN General Assembly, which is celebrating its 81st edition this week.
The American leader explained to the media that his meeting with the representatives of Iran "went very well." "It finished an hour ago. It was a meeting that lasted three hours. It was a very good meeting. I must say it was very good," he declared, accompanied by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
In his words, Trump emphasized the consequences of the decisions that Tehran makes. "I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to do it. It's greatness, potential greatness, or annihilation. I mean, in one case it's annihilation, and the other alternative is potential greatness. It could be a great country," he remarked.
Although he avoided specifying which Iranian officials he met with, the American leader had stated hours earlier before the UN General Assembly that a possible agreement with the Iranian authorities to end the conflict in the Middle East would be reached "right after the elections" for the midterm legislative elections, scheduled for November 3 in the United States, also insisting that "it would make no sense not to achieve it."
According to sources cited by the Iranian television network IRIB, there would have been a meeting between Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi.
According to this information, the head of Iranian diplomacy would have agreed to meet with the American negotiator at the "insistence" of the latter, an opportunity he took to present the conditions of the Islamic Republic to reopen the Strait of Hormuz: the lifting of the blockade imposed by Washington on its ports, the release of all its frozen assets, and the cessation of hostilities on "all" fronts.
