The Mexican authorities have confirmed the death of two people, among them a senior commander of the Cártel de Guasave wanted by the United States, during an operation by the Navy carried out in the state of Sinaloa, in the northwest of the country.
The Minister of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, indicated in a statement circulated on social media that the operation took place in the vicinity of the Alfredo V. Bonfil neighborhood, within the framework of the "permanent actions" to "advance in the pacification of Sinaloa".
"During the confrontation, two people lost their lives, among them, according to the available information, Jesús González Peñuelas, alias 'Chuy Peñuelas', one of the operators of the Cártel de Guasave," he said, before underlining that the authorities in Washington maintained a reward of five million dollars (around 4.45 million euros) for information leading to his arrest.
The security official added that in the operation four vehicles, three weapons, magazines and various types of ammunition were seized, and specified that all the seized material has been handed over to the Prosecutor's Office for the corresponding proceedings. "These actions reflect the importance of the coordinated and intelligence work of the institutions that make up the Security Cabinet to achieve the pacification of Sinaloa," García Harfuch emphasized.
