A Colombian judge has imposed this Friday a sentence of more than 21 years in prison on Harold Daniel Barragán for his involvement in the assassination of former presidential candidate and senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, which occurred just over a year ago during an event in Bogotá, a crime that shook the entire country.
The magistrate of a specialized criminal court in Bogotá set Barragán a sentence of 21 years and four months in prison, following an agreement with the Prosecutor's Office in which the accused admitted to the crimes of "aggravated homicide, aggravated conspiracy to commit a crime, use of minors for the commission of crimes, and manufacture, trafficking, possession or carrying of firearms, accessories, parts or aggravated ammunition."
According to the accusation, Barragán "participated in the coordination of the actions before and after the attack, including the reconnaissance of the place where the attack was carried out" through "four video calls," reports Caracol Radio along with other national media.
Likewise, the convicted "is attributed with having selected the teenager who shot at the victim and helped Elder José Arteaga, alias 'Chipi', to remain hidden and evade the action of the authorities."
For the Prosecutor's Office, "it was evident that this man was part of a criminal group dedicated to selective homicides and drug trafficking, among other illegal activities."
Together with Barragán, three other people have also received sentences of more than 21 years in prison: Simeón Pérez Marroquín, Katherine Andrea Martínez Martínez, and Carlos Eduardo Mora González. However, the total number of those prosecuted for the murder of Uribe amounts to nine.
The senator's crime, perpetrated on August 11, 2025, by a 15-year-old minor, deeply impacted Colombian society and revived memories of the darkest years of political violence, especially during the 80s and 90s, when the murders of leaders were common. Investigations point to a structure of hitmen as responsible for organizing the attack, although the specific motives for the homicide remain unclear.
