The Government of Spain has expressed this Sunday its absolute rejection of the "brutal terrorist attack" carried out on Saturday by the Houthi militias of Yemen against the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, an assault that, for now, has caused at least twelve fatalities and more than 300 people injured.

"The Government of Spain condemns with total firmness the brutal Houthi terrorist attack against the international airport of Riyadh, and conveys its condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and its most sincere wishes for a speedy recovery of the injured," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has stated in an official statement.

In the same note, the Spanish Executive "reiterates its full solidarity and support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the internationally recognized Government of Yemen in the face of the unacceptable Houthi attacks."

Likewise, Foreign Affairs emphasizes that "the Houthi militias must immediately cease their escalation of violence and indiscriminate attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure," while demanding a "de-escalation" and a "negotiated solution under the auspices of the United Nations" that takes into account Resolution 2216 of the UN Security Council, adopted in 2015 and which imposed an arms embargo on the Houthis.

This attack is considered the deadliest recorded in Saudi territory since Saudi Arabia and its allies in Yemen launched a military counteroffensive against the Houthi rebels last weekend, in a context of growing tension and escalation of the conflict in the area.

On Thursday, October 8, the Houthi forces had already attacked the facilities of this same airport and a plane of the airline Saudi Arabian Airlines, an episode in which three deaths and several injuries were recorded.
