The armed forces of the internationally recognized Government of Yemen reported this Saturday the death of a dozen Houthi fighters after thwarting an offensive by the insurgent group in a locality in the province of Marib, located in the western interior of the country.
In a brief message disseminated on social media, the Yemeni Army stated that its troops managed to frustrate an "infiltration of the Houthi militia in the Al Fuliahan sector, south of Marib, killing 12 Houthi fighters and wounding others, while the rest fled."
The conflict in Yemen is entering a new phase of intensification of violence both within its borders and in the regional sphere, pitting Houthi rebels against the forces of the military coalition led by Saudi Arabia. Tension has particularly increased after the Houthi militia announced a maritime blockade following reports of airstrikes by Riyadh against their positions in support of the government recognized by the international community.
This escalation is compounded by the offensive launched in early September by the Houthis on the western coast of the country, which has allowed them to consolidate control over several strategic localities near the Bab el Mandeb strait. This operation has also triggered the displacement of more than 100,000 people, according to estimates published by the United Nations.
