The authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo updated on Monday the balance of the Ebola outbreak, the most severe recorded so far in the country, and place the number of deceased at 1,960 and the confirmed cases at 4,294, according to the latest evening report from the Public Health Institute, which collects data up to last Saturday.
According to the details provided by the Congolese Ministry of Communication, there are currently 722 patients in isolation or admitted to healthcare centers, while 849 people have managed to overcome the disease.
The spread of the virus continues to be "active" in four of the five affected provinces: Ituri —considered the epicenter of the outbreak—, North Kivu, Upper Uele, and Tshopo. In contrast, in South Kivu, 73 days have already passed without any new confirmed cases being reported.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned at the end of last week about the enormous severity of the health crisis. The outbreak —belonging to the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is still no approved vaccine— was declared on May 15 and has since concentrated in the northern province of Ituri, an area hit by militia attacks that have forced part of the population to flee and have considerably complicated the work of medical teams to contain the disease.
