The Prime Minister of Iraq, Ali al Zaidi, has decided this Monday to relieve from his position the director of the National Intelligence Service, Hamid al Shatri, who had been appointed by the previous head of Government, Mohamed Shia al Sudani, just over two years ago.
The dismissal is included in an order dated October 26 and signed by the head of the Prime Minister's office, Rashad Jalaf Hashim. The document, disseminated by the official Iraqi agency INA, only specifies that the measure takes effect "immediate".
With this decision, a change occurs at the head of one of the main security agencies of the country. Al Shatri had assumed the leadership of the National Intelligence Service in December 2024, after his appointment by then Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al Sudani, and for the moment, it has not been indicated who will now take the reins of the Iraqi intelligence services.
The document does not provide any explanation regarding the reasons for the dismissal of Al Shatri, 57 years old, who throughout his career has held various high-responsibility positions within the national security apparatus.
