The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers-National Intersyndical (CGTP-IN), the main union in Portugal, has condemned the forced eviction of the housing camps in Lisbon and Porto, an action it describes as "repressive action."

The union central reproaches the Government that "instead of offering a response to the problems of the country, there is a clear orientation towards the limitation of freedoms, particularly the right to protest."

In its statement, the CGTP-IN denounces a "restrictive interpretation" of the legislation "that has no parallel in the last 50 years" and that "contravenes the rights enshrined in the Constitution."

The union extends its criticisms to the entire policy of the Executive, which it accuses of implementing measures that "worsen the situation of workers, young people, retirees, and the population, deny rights, and accentuate exploitation in the service of the accumulation of profits of big capital."

The organization also recalls the mobilizations "around the housing problem, which reflects a great concern among workers and the population, especially young people, in the face of the denial of the right to housing."

In the context of these evictions of the housing camps set up in the center of Lisbon and Porto, dozens of people have been injured during the early morning.
