The leader of the Greens in the United Kingdom, Zack Polanski, announced this Friday that he will run in the by-elections for the London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras, with the aim of occupying the seat left vacant by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"I am filled with joy to present myself as a candidate in the upcoming elections to be the MP for Holborn and St Pancras. Twenty years ago, when I first moved to London, Camden Town became my home. And you know what? We can win these elections," he declared in a message on social media with which he formalizes his candidacy.
Polanski emphasized that if he manages to enter the House of Commons, he will focus his efforts on "reducing everyone's bills," advocating measures such as rent control and the nationalization of London's water network. On environmental matters, he reiterated that his proposal is to "leave oil and gas in the ground."
The date with the polls comes in a context of momentum for the Green Party, which currently has five seats in Westminster, the highest number in its history, after increasing its presence in the local and regional elections held last May. Additionally, in February, the party won a constituency in northern England traditionally dominated by the Labour Party.
On September 1, Starmer announced his resignation as a Labour MP to fully dedicate himself to "international affairs." "It is time to step aside and focus on other matters: international issues that include areas such as defense, security, trade, and technology in a constantly changing world," explained the former leader.
Starmer left the position of Prime Minister last July, amid an internal struggle within Labour to renew leadership, following a loss of electoral support and mistakes attributed to his management in government.
