The president of the Swiss Confederation and current Minister of Economy, Guy Parmelin, announced this Friday that he will leave both positions on December 31, 2026, citing personal wear after more than ten years holding different responsibilities in the federal sphere.

In an appearance before the media, Parmelin, 66 years old, explained his decision by pointing out that "the passion is no longer the same as at the beginning," although he emphasized that his departure does not respond to any health problem.

The Swiss leader, who has been part of the federal government since 2016, stressed the convenience of passing the baton to "dynamic forces in these times of great uncertainty."

Originally from the canton of Vaud, he first headed the Ministry of Defense, Civil Protection, and Sports, and later took over the direction of the Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research, a responsibility he has held since 2019.

Within the political system of Switzerland, Parmelin has held the Presidency of the Confederation in 2021 and 2026. This position is appointed by the Federal Assembly for a period of one year, with the aim of ensuring rotation among the different cantons. The president does not have more powers than the other six federal councilors and maintains the leadership of his respective department.
