The Department of Justice of the United States has filed a new motion before a court in Washington with the aim of restoring CNN's access ban to the White House, considering that the channel is disseminating classified material that "harms national security."
The request also extends to the information portal Politico and the MS NOW network, whose journalists had already seen their entry to the presidential complex blocked until a court ruling nullified the order pushed by Trump.
According to the document, cited by CNN itself, the Department of Justice argues that "the President determined that the plaintiff news outlets had published articles that harm national security, including possibly classified or sensitive information."
"In doing so, these media demonstrated their willingness to publish information that undermines national security. Restricting access to the White House eliminates a way for these media to obtain such harmful information," the Department states in the text sent late last Friday.
In a separate filing registered with the court on Monday night, the involved media defended that the information questioned by Trump constitutes precisely the type of journalistic work that the framers of the Constitution intended to safeguard. In their document, they described the ban as an "illegal attack on the most fundamental freedoms of the First Amendment."
