Aleksandar Vučić has recognized this Sunday the defeat of his bloc in the Serbian parliamentary elections against the candidacy supported by the student movement, according to reports from The Guardian and The Pavlovic Today. The result opens the possibility of a change of Government after 14 years of dominance by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
The leader has estimated that his party will achieve between 105 and 106 of the 250 seats in the National Assembly, below the 126 needed to reach an absolute majority. These figures correspond to the calculation conveyed by Vučić and still need to be confirmed by the official results.
Vučić has also anticipated that the Student List will have a parliamentary majority. His recognition of the defeat occurs while the confirmation of the final distribution of seats is still pending.
From the protests in Novi Sad to the polls
The student candidacy emerged from the mobilizations initiated after the collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad station in November 2024, which caused 16 deaths. The tragedy triggered protests against corruption and the lack of transparency, with demands for political accountability.
After almost two years of mobilizations, the movement took its challenge to the polls with a list headed by cardiologist Ilija Srdanović and mainly composed of civil society professionals. Its rise turned these early elections into a decisive test for the continuity of Vučić's bloc.
Vučić aimed to return as prime minister
The elections held this Sunday are parliamentary. Vučić had resigned from the presidency of Serbia in September to lead his bloc's campaign and aimed to return to the position of prime minister.
His recognition of the defeat represents a turn in a day that began with uncertainty about the outcome. In the absence of definitive results, attention now focuses on the majority that the student candidacy can gather and on the steps to form the next Government.
