The National Police arrested yesterday in Ceuta a resident of the city accused of causing damage to a car in which the Ceuta deputy Julia Ferreras, the Gaza Flotilla activist Rafael Borrego, and the lawyer specialized in human rights Sofía Cánovas were traveling.
The events took place around 8:15 PM in the vehicle exit area of the Port of Ceuta, where dozens of residents gathered to show their rejection of the arrival of the Pamplona group Negu Gorriak/Derecho a Techo, which they labeled as "radical" and accused of coming to "break the coexistence."
During the protest, several attendees blocked the advance of a car whose occupants they did not identify. According to some of those present who reported to this agency, the co-pilot —Rafael Borrego— had started recording the scene with his mobile phone and reproaching them for their behavior.
At that moment, those gathered began to throw eggs at the vehicle and shake it, which forced a rapid intervention by the National Police. There were also scuffles between protesters and agents, and the arrival of support riot units ended with shots in the air to disperse those gathered.
The arrested person is charged with damage to the vehicle and an alleged crime of assault against law enforcement officers. After the violent episode, it has been revealed who was actually traveling in the car, as the protesters would have attacked them after confusing them with members of the Navarre group.
The Secretary General of Ceuta Ya!, Mohamed Mustafa, has detailed the identity of the people who were in the car and has indicated that Ferreras has already filed a complaint at police facilities.
