Elecciones generales del 29 de noviembre · Demócrata

The president of the Popular Party and candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, presented this Sunday, October 25, the team with which he will face the general elections on November 29, claiming a political renewal that, he argues, will allow the launch of a new project for Spain. Through a post on his X account, the popular leader shared a message in which he defines his candidates as "the architects of reconstruction" and promises to promote the "most ambitious reformist project since the Transition". The post concludes with a slogan aimed at mobilizing his supporters in the final stretch of the pre-campaign: "LET'S GO, SPAIN!".

The message arrives after the event held this Sunday in Salamanca, where Feijóo has gathered the main candidates of the PP for the Congress of Deputies in a call with which the party wanted to showcase unity and management capacity. The meeting, held at the Center for Scenic Arts and Music (CAEM), was attended by the president of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco; the parliamentary and campaign spokesperson, Ester Muñoz; and the mayor of Salamanca, Carlos García Carbayo, in addition to the candidates from the different constituencies. The presentation takes place five weeks before the elections and one day before the deadline for submitting candidacies to the electoral boards.

Feijóo claims his candidates as the "architects of reconstruction"

The choice of words used by Feijóo in his publication responds to the message that the popular leader has conveyed during the Salamanca event. The president of the PP believes that Spain needs a phase of political, economic, and institutional reforms and has presented his candidates as those responsible for developing that project if he manages to reach La Moncloa. In his speech, he contrasted the management experience of the popular leaders with the criticisms he maintains against the government of Pedro Sánchez, whom he accuses of having deteriorated the functioning of the institutions and of not providing sufficient answers to the main problems of the country.

The popular leader has assured that he intends to promote a deep, calm, and reformist political change, a formula with which he seeks to differentiate his proposal both from the continuity of the PSOE and from other political alternatives. Feijóo has defended that renewal should not be limited to the figure of the candidate for the presidency, but should extend to the entire group of representatives that will make up the next Congress of Deputies. In this sense, he has demanded commitment to public service from the members of his lists and has insisted that the exercise of power should be oriented towards solving the problems of citizens.

The PP renews almost 60% of its candidates for the general elections

The presentation in Salamanca has also served to stage a renewal of 59.6% of the head candidates of the Popular Party compared to the general elections of 2023. Of the 52 electoral constituencies, the formation has introduced 31 new number ones, while the other 21 repeat as main candidates. The objective of the national leadership is to combine the experience of its parliamentary leaders with the incorporation of mayors, regional councilors, and public officials who can claim their management track record.

Among the most prominent names of this new stage are Xavier García Albiol, mayor of Badalona and candidate for Barcelona; María José Catalá, mayor of Valencia and head of the list for that province; and Carlos Velázquez, mayor of Toledo. Other profiles from regional governments and municipalities are also incorporated, while Feijóo retains part of his trusted team in relevant positions. In Madrid, the PP president himself again heads the candidacy, accompanied by Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo and Borja Sémper, while leaders like Miguel Tellado, Cuca Gamarra, and Ester Muñoz maintain prominence in the electoral structure.

The renewal is especially significant in communities like Catalonia, where the PP has changed its four provincial head candidates, and in the Community of Valencia, where it has opted for candidacies led by women. With these movements, Feijóo seeks to strengthen the territorial presence of the party and project an image of a team ready to assume institutional responsibilities.

Housing, taxes, and pensions: the priorities of Feijóo's project

The discourse on political reconstruction is accompanied by a program of measures that the PP intends to place at the center of the electoral campaign. During the event in Salamanca, Feijóo reiterated his commitment to promote the construction of one million homes, reduce the tax burden on workers and self-employed individuals, and guarantee the adjustment of pensions according to the CPI. He also announced his intention to undertake a general audit of public accounts and promote reforms aimed at strengthening institutional control mechanisms.

The popular leader has used these proposals to question Sánchez's economic management, especially due to the impact of inflation and the cost of living on families. Feijóo believes that citizens are not perceiving a sufficient improvement in their purchasing power and has accused the Government of increasing the tax burden during its eight years in power. In light of this situation, the PP defends a strategy based on tax cuts, administrative reforms, and measures aimed at facilitating economic activity, although the budgetary scope and the concrete application of some of these initiatives will need to be specified in its electoral program.

Pensions have been another of the highlighted issues. Feijóo has guaranteed that he will maintain their annual revaluation according to inflation and has defended the need to ensure the sustainability of the system for younger generations. With this commitment, the president of the PP seeks to respond to socialist criticisms about the consequences that a change of Government could have on public benefits.

The PP shows unity in Salamanca five weeks before 29N

The presentation of the electoral team also comes after several days of confrontation between the main parties. In Salamanca, Feijóo has accused Sánchez of fueling political polarization and has used the disturbances recorded on Saturday in Barcelona to question the Government's management in terms of coexistence and security. The popular leader has condemned the altercations and has expressed his support for the affected agents and merchants, although his accusations regarding a supposed political responsibility of the Executive must be distinguished from the facts that the security forces are investigating.

The event has also served to support Feijóo's candidacy from one of the main territorial organizations of the PP. Alfonso Fernández Mañueco has defended the need for political alternation, while Ester Muñoz has questioned the PSOE's proposals and has claimed the popular project as an alternative for the next four years.

With the publication of this Sunday, Feijóo transfers to social networks the image of unity that he has wanted to project in Salamanca. The president of the PP presents his candidates as the team responsible for developing his proposal for reforms and places the elections of November 29 as the moment when citizens will decide whether that project obtains the necessary support to govern. His message summarizes the strategy with which the party faces the coming weeks: to combine the renewal of its candidacies, the claim of management experience, and the promise of a new political and institutional stage.
