The Pontevedra locality of Cerdedo-Cotobade will once again host this Saturday, August 29, the traditional event with which the Popular Party kicks off the new political season. The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will speak at the event, while the president of the Xunta and leader of the PPdeG, Alfonso Rueda, will act as host.
Popular sources have indicated to Europa Press that the event will repeat its setting in the Carballeira de San Xusto, in Cerdedo-Cotobade, after the event was already held there in 2024 and 2025, following a break in 2023, when the party decided to return temporarily to the Castle of Soutomaior.
In 2023, the return to the castle was interpreted as a political gesture linked to the recovery by the PP of control of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, which until the municipal elections of that year had been governed by the PSOE and had prevented the celebration of the event in that location on several occasions.
"Settling" that account, in 2024 Feijóo and his team opted again for the Carballeira de San Xusto, in Cerdedo-Cotobade, the same place they plan to return to this Saturday for the official opening of the season.
The symbolic weight of Cerdedo-Cotobade
For the Popular Party, Cerdedo-Cotobade has acquired a strong symbolic component. There, the leader of Os Peares starred in 2022 in his first political course opening as the highest responsible of the PP at the national level, and had previously participated in several similar events as host in Galicia.
In addition, the PP maintains the tradition of formally starting the political season in Galician territory since the time when Mariano Rajoy was at the head of the party, thus consolidating Galicia as a reference point in the party's internal calendar.
A start conditioned by the Ceuta crisis
If in the last edition the backdrop was the serious fires that hit the Galician community, this start of the political season — before a year with several electoral dates on the horizon — will be marked above all by the migratory crisis in Ceuta.
The PP event will also take place in the lead-up to the appearance of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in the Congress of Deputies, scheduled for September 3, in which he will inform about the situation in Ceuta.
