The federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU), Antonio Maíllo, has demanded this Sunday from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, that he urgently reconsiders the entirety of his relations with Morocco after the massive assault of immigrants in Ceuta, and has reproached him for continuing to "campaign" for the PP and Vox in the context of this crisis.
Maíllo launched this message during the defense of his political report before the meeting of the Federal Coordinator, where the situation in Ceuta has occupied a central place and where he has harshly criticized the Executive. He accused it of having reacted "late, erratically, and without transparency and without dimensioning the humanitarian tragedy --which has claimed the lives of 145 people-- and its political consequences."
Although he emphasized that Morocco is "the criminal responsible" for the "hybrid attack" in Ceuta, "with the support of the United States and Israel," the IU leader has questioned the "failed" strategy of the PSOE regarding the neighboring country and its "erratic" management of the crisis. He particularly stressed the "failure" of the Spanish intelligence services in the face of a threat that, in his opinion, was foreseeable, and has demanded that responsibilities be assumed.
According to Maíllo, "this attack demonstrates that the policy of appeasement with Morocco, implemented by Pedro Sánchez and the PSOE, has failed," which, in his opinion, requires an "urgent" rethinking of the entire framework of relations with Rabat. "We want good neighborliness, but a loyal neighborliness and with compliance with agreements," he emphasized.
Criticism of Vivas and the management in Ceuta
In addition to addressing Sánchez, Maíllo has attacked the President of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, whom he has reproached for the "irresponsible turn" that, in his view, he has taken by moving from an initially "collaborative" position to becoming a "spokesperson for incendiary speeches" and for keeping the Ceuta citizens as "hostages."
"Today he continues to insist on another of his major mistakes in this crisis: keeping the migrants in Ceuta instead of transferring them to the Peninsula," the federal coordinator of IU has denounced. He has warned that this pressure on the Ceuta population is generating "violence and tension" in coexistence, "which the PP and Vox do not stop taking advantage of" to try to "overthrow" the central Government.
Fifty days have passed since the outbreak of the crisis in the autonomous city, Maíllo has urged "to comply with the law, resolving each file of reception and asylum" and, provisionally, to transfer both minors and the rest of the immigrants to the Peninsula.
The leader of IU has lamented that the conflict in Ceuta is blocking "the necessary momentum" for the social agenda of the Executive. Taking advantage of the start of the political course, he has called on his organization to face this stage with "ambition and work" to push forward measures such as the reform of the Law of Dependency and Disability approved this week or the Law that recognizes Spanish nationality for the Sahrawi people, along with initiatives in housing or the intervention of the prices of the shopping basket.
He has also demanded "more feminist public policy, more prevention, more awareness, guarantee of support, accompaniment, and economic independence for the victims" of macho violence, as well as the implementation, with public research, of new strategies for the prevention and extinction of fires.
IU, in electoral terms
In this context, Maíllo has assured that IU is "prepared" to face the upcoming electoral processes with lists that combine "experience and renewal," allow for generational change, and represent the diversity of a plural and multiracial working class.
In this line, the spokesperson for Por Andalucía and federal coordinator of IU has explained that this Sunday the organization activates the internal process for militants and supporters to choose their candidate for the upcoming general elections.
"With this we offer a candidate to the political space in which we want to present ourselves: a broad left front that has the will not only to stop the far right and the right but, above all, to build an alternative and a country project".
