The political secretary and MEP of Podemos, Irene Montero, has supported the call for a "general strike" driven this week by the Tenants' Union to "force the system to change," also accusing landlords of "kidnapping" a democracy that can only be "liberated" through "mobilizations."
When asked about a possible early election, Montero avoided commenting on whether the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, should call elections, emphasizing that it is a decision that is not "in his hands" nor "in the hands of the majority of the people who are mobilizing." She pointed this out on Friday in an interview on "Hora 25" of Cadena Ser, reported by Europa Press.
The MEP has maintained the same stance as her general secretary, Ione Belarra, who in the morning had emphasized that any advance of the elections would respond exclusively to the internal calculation of the Socialist Party (PSOE): "What Pedro Sánchez decides I believe depends on his electoral interest."
When questioned about the existence of an alternative majority to the left of the PSOE in the face of a possible early election, the former Minister of Equality responded that "Sol is fuller than on 15-M" and assured that "yes, I believe there are many leftist people who are eager for leftism."
In this line, she has highlighted the determination of the people camped at Puerta del Sol, reminding that "it is not easy to go to sleep for a week in a square" nor "to spend your time going to a demo" or "to a strike." "The truth is that I see quite a few people with whom to fight that battle whenever Pedro Sánchez calls," she added.
Bet on primaries and a united candidacy to the left of the PSOE
Montero has defended the need to organize primary elections considering that "it is the way" to do "things right" and has shown her support for a united list of the forces to the left of the PSOE: "Yes, of course."
In this sense, she has emphasized that "if it is possible for thousands of people to be camped at Puerta del Sol, if it is possible for millions of people to take to the streets to defend the right to housing, of course it will be possible to have a candidacy."
