The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, held a meeting this Monday in New York with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, in which they addressed the main priorities of the multilateral agenda in an increasingly complex international context conditioned by current geopolitical challenges.
The meeting took place coinciding with the start of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Both leaders emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between states and to protect international dialogue forums and mechanisms as an essential tool to tackle global problems that require joint and coordinated responses.
In this framework, Sánchez expressed to Guterres his recognition for the work he is doing at the head of the United Nations, in a stage marked by international fragmentation and the need to articulate common responses to the major challenges affecting the entire international community.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the UN highlighted the "excellent cooperation" between the United Nations and Spain and thanked the head of the Spanish Executive for the country's commitment to strengthening multilateralism.
The situation of instability and violence affecting various regions of the planet also occupied a substantial part of the meeting. In this regard, Sánchez and Guterres emphasized the urgency of deepening international cooperation to face a scenario of strong polarization, with open wars and crises such as those in Ukraine, Gaza, and the Middle East.
Alongside the analysis of the global geopolitical situation, both defended the need to maintain the momentum of international efforts in environmental matters and insisted on the importance of continuing to advance in the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The meeting took place within the framework of the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which brings together member states to address the main issues on the international agenda.
The president of the Government traveled this Monday to New York to participate in the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, where he plans to address the crisis in Ceuta following the massive entry of immigrants from Morocco, with the aim of defending his management and Spain's migration model.
Sánchez arrives at this international forum with an agenda that includes, in addition, issues such as the governance of artificial intelligence, the defense of the multilateral system, and the claim of Spain's economic model, according to sources from Moncloa.
Political and economic agenda in the United States
After his meeting this Monday with Guterres, Sánchez will attend the opening session of the general debate at the Assembly on Tuesday, where he will coincide with the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
On Wednesday the 23rd, he will participate as the main guest in the event organized by the Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, where they will advocate for an economic model aimed at reducing the cost of living for citizens and where he will show alignment on wealth redistribution and shared prosperity.
His speech before the UN General Assembly is scheduled for the early morning of Wednesday to Thursday, at 02:00 hours, and on Thursday he will travel to the city of Boston, where he will speak at Harvard University and hold a meeting with the Governor of the state of Massachusetts.
Sánchez will dedicate a significant part of his speeches to promoting international regulation on artificial intelligence. In the Government, they believe that there will eventually be some type of legislation in this area, since even the companies developing it are saying that it is necessary. The big unknown is how it will be articulated, and Sánchez is going to defend a humanist model that places the rights of people at the center.
