The president of the Government and candidate for re-election for the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that he will promote a reform of the Constitution with the aim of legally guaranteeing the update of pensions based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as long as he manages to remain in La Moncloa after the general elections on November 29.
During a pre-campaign rally held this Monday in Gijón (Asturias), in front of about 6,000 people among attendees in the venue and those who stayed outside, the socialist leader made this announcement "in the face of the threat from PP and Vox," whom he accuses of wanting to cut and privatize the public retirement system.
In his speech, Sánchez evoked the protests of pensioners during the previous financial crisis and emphasized that, when he arrived at the Executive, he restored the annual revaluation of pensions based on the cost of living, in order to reverse the "counter-reform" approved by then-president Mariano Rajoy (PP).
"And now, in the face of the threat from PP and Vox, I take on the following commitment: In the next legislature, we will reform the Constitution to safeguard pensions and their revaluation according to the CPI," he stated, highlighting that he was making this announcement in an autonomous community with a particularly high proportion of retired population.
