The Science, Industry and Employment Commission of the General Board of the Principality of Asturias has given the green light this Tuesday to a non-legislative proposal presented by the PP, focused on the implementation of measures to improve mobile phone coverage in all inhabited areas of the Asturian territory.

The proposal was approved with the favorable votes of the PP, Vox, and the Secretary General of Foro Asturias and deputy of the Mixed Group, Adrián Pumares. For their part, the groups that support the regional government, PSOE and Convocatoria por Asturies IU-Más Pais-IAS, positioned themselves against it, arguing that the competencies in telecommunications correspond to the State. However, their votes were insufficient to prevent the approval of the initiative.

In essence, the proposal approved by the General Board calls on the Government of the Principality to establish close collaboration with the municipalities, with the aim of accurately identifying the inhabited areas that do not have mobile phone coverage or that have poor coverage, contrasting the actual coverage with the theoretical coverage declared by the operators.

Likewise, the text urges the regional government to promote, together with telecommunications companies, public-private collaboration formulas that allow for the deployment of mobile phone infrastructures in those inhabited areas where there is currently no service or there are no plans for installation.

In the same way, it highlights the convenience of promoting the implementation of support infrastructures that guarantee a minimum mobile phone coverage in all inhabited areas of the Principality of Asturias that lack the service, prioritizing those with an aging population or that face greater difficulties in accessing basic services.

Finally, the proposal raises the need to reinforce mobile phone coverage on the Autonomous Road Network of the Principality of Asturias, with special attention to the sections with greater isolation or danger, with the aim of improving road safety and ensuring communication with emergency services.
