The councilor of Rural Environment, María José Gómez, has emphasized the "economic, social, and environmental importance" of the Galician beekeeping sector during her participation in the IX Honey Fair of Baleira.
According to the Xunta in a statement, the head of Rural Environment stressed that this event allows for the confirmation of the growth of beekeeping in the Lucense mountain and, in general, throughout Galicia.
Furthermore, she pointed out that the event serves to highlight the quality of the honey produced in the area and, at the same time, boost the economy of the municipality, spread the advantages of beekeeping, and keep rural customs alive.
In this regard, Gómez highlighted the "important role" that bees play in the protection of the natural environment and in the economic activity of the countryside, and made a call to "take care of them."
Finally, the councilor reiterated the support of the Xunta for the beekeeping sector with the aim of assisting beekeepers in improving their competitiveness, modernizing their operations, and strengthening control systems against threats such as varroa or the velutina wasp.
