The general secretary of Unións Agrarias, Roberto García, warns that the beef cattle sector is going through a negative evolution so far in 2026, due to the drop in quotations caused by the closure of exports to Morocco, while production costs are skyrocketing.
During a conference held in Pedrafita do Cebreiro (Lugo) on environmental management in beef cattle farms, García laments the existence of "low profitability" in a scenario conditioned by the appearance of new diseases that affect livestock. He also emphasizes a "significant increase" in production expenses that farmers are "unable to pass on to prices".
García likewise refers to recent studies that conclude that meat production ceases to be viable if the profit margin provided by the aids of the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC) is eliminated. For this reason, he warns of the risk posed by "a reduction of more than 22%" in the future PAC, a cut that he views with "great concern" for the 2028-34 period.
In relation to the meat producers of the Lugo mountains, the head of Unións Agrarias stresses that "it is increasingly difficult" to guarantee their continuity, due to the lack of specific public resources and the absence of generational replacement in these farms.
