The Compromís deputy in Congress, Àgueda Micó, has once again demanded the resignation of the 'expresident' Carlos Mazón as a deputy of the PP in Les Corts, following the management of the storm Adam in recent days. In her opinion, this new episode of torrential rains confirms that "Mazón did not want to act" during the storm of October 29, 2024, in which 233 people died.
Micó made these statements during a visit to the areas affected by Adam in the regions of Safor (Valencia) and Marina Alta (Alicante), where she was accompanied by the spokesperson of Compromís, Joan Baldoví. There she insisted that "this storm has shown that nothing was wanted to be done in the previous one" and emphasized that Mazón defended in the congressional investigation committee that it was not possible to intervene in the face of a downpour of 700 liters per square meter, as the Valencian coalition has recalled.
In this sense, she cited as an example that "these days there have been municipalities that have exceeded 700 liters per square meter and the consequences in terms of fatalities have not been the same, because people could indeed be confined," she pointed out. Therefore, she has again urged the resignation of the popular leader: "Carlos Mazón is incompetent and a liar and cannot remain even one more day as a deputy of Les Corts Valencianes."
At the same time, Micó has demanded that the central government process the aid directed to the people and municipalities affected by the new floods much more quickly than in 2024. "From Congress, we will demand two things: that the government's aid arrives much faster and that no reconstruction is based on doing the same thing that we already know fails."
Criticism of reconstruction and the role of PP and PSOE
The deputy has warned that the reconstruction of the damaged areas cannot ignore the climate emergency nor be limited to replacing the infrastructures prior to the floods. In her opinion, it is necessary to introduce criteria for prevention and adaptation against future episodes of extreme rains. In this regard, she has criticized that "both the PP and the PSOE understand reconstruction as rebuilding what was already there in the areas that have already flooded. They have learned nothing."
Micó has defended that it is essential to rethink urban planning in flood-prone areas and consider the particularities of the Valencian territory in the planning of actions. He has recalled that "we are in the zero zone of climate change. What has happened now in Marina and Safor, and what has already happened in l'Horta Sud, l'Horta Nord or the Foia de Buñol, can happen to any of us at any moment. We must rebuild knowing that climate change acts with virulence, attending to the course of the water and to the flood-prone areas."
