The president of the Junta de Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, has defended the need for a housing policy based on effectiveness and away from ideological confrontation during his participation in the "Foro Ancares. The challenges of the Northwest," a stance he shares with the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda.

"Less populism, less ideology. What we need is management and effective management," Fernández Mañueco has emphasized, who has highlighted the model applied in Castilla and León, with "more public aid than ever" both for elderly people who wish to remain in their homes and to facilitate young people being able to emancipate.

Regarding the future development of the residential market, he has advocated for promoting public housing and has stressed that the central Government must get involved in a "clear" way with private promotion. "It is essential that there is a clear commitment to support the construction sector so that they build. There are difficulties (...) And the Government of Spain has to be there," he added.

In this context, he also referred to the housing savings account promoted by the Junta, which will come into effect next year and aims to encourage young people to access home ownership through tax incentives.

At the same time, he has called for the existence of legal tools that reinforce the legal security of property owners: "This thing that you make available or have a house and do not make it available, but it gets occupied and you have no legal mechanisms to defend yourself, that seems very serious to me. The right to property must be respected. The peculiar, special circumstances must be taken into account, without a doubt, but the model that the Government of Spain is implementing is not the solution to the problems," he concluded.

The "Foro Ancares. The challenges of the Northwest" has taken place in Ponferrada (León). The meeting, organized by the newspapers Diario de León and El Progreso de Lugo, seeks to delve into the socioeconomic challenges shared by both autonomous communities.
