The general secretary of UGT, Pepe Álvarez, indicated this Wednesday that the unemployment figures recorded in August are "similar" to those of previous years and emphasized that Spain continues to drag a marked problem of seasonality in employment.

In statements to RNE, Álvarez recalled that "August is a month that has certain characteristics" and insisted that, to carry out a more rigorous analysis of the labor market situation, it is necessary to refer to the EPA, which "is the one that really has validity."

The union leader also pointed out that the extraordinary process of regularization of foreign individuals is contributing to "unearthing employment that already existed" and that until now was performed by workers who lacked recognized labor rights.

Álvarez reiterated the importance of moving towards a "quality" employment model, with a greater weight of the industrial sector and that makes it possible for wage earners to develop "a reasonable life," taking advantage of the current economic growth to tackle the structural problems that the Spanish labor market drags.
