The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, defended this Thursday that Spaniards must know in what "state the tracks and the safety systems" of the railway in Spain are, after the disaster between two trains in Toledo in which at least 68 people have lost their lives.
In this context, he has requested that it be clarified what actions have been carried out since the Adamuz (Córdoba) accident last January and has called for a "complete and independent review" of the entire railway network, together with an investigation promoted by the Government and another in judicial proceedings.
"An immediate government investigation and another judicial one at the appropriate times, with all the means and without interference, are essential," Feijóo stated in an institutional declaration from the national headquarters of the PP, in which he began by conveying his condolences to the relatives of the victims. For now, at least 68 fatalities and dozens of injured are being counted after the collision of an AVE with an Iryo in the municipal district of Los Yébenes (Toledo).
Feijóo has admitted that today is not the time to "discuss political responsibilities," although he has stressed the need to provide security to the citizenry. "Spain has the right to know what is happening with its infrastructure, in what state the tracks and the safety systems are, what warnings were received from Adamuz and what measures were adopted," he stated, to emphasize that citizens also "have the right to a complete and independent review of the entire network."
The Popular leader explained that the PP —which has decided to suspend its campaign schedule— will participate this afternoon, at 8:00 p.m., in the town halls throughout the country in the minute of silence called by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, which they will attend "with pain, with solidarity and with demands." "And I first of all. I wish the injured to recover favorably and the victims to rest in peace," he concluded.
