The German authorities have launched an investigation into an incident recorded last Saturday, when a Boeing 787 from Vietnam Airlines was forced to return to Munich airport after experiencing problems during the takeoff maneuver, which caused damage to both the tires and the landing gear.
The exact cause of the event was not known at first, so the presence of a representative from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation has been requested, as reported by "DPA".
According to a spokesperson for the Bavarian capital's airport, the aircraft, which was destined for Hanoi (Vietnam), took longer than usual to gain altitude when taking off from the south runway of the airfield. Shortly after starting the flight, the aircraft turned around and landed again, this time on the north runway.
After landing, the plane could not move on its own, so it was secured and subsequently towed to a hangar for inspection. None of the passengers were injured and all were transported by bus to the airport terminal.
Subsequently, the remains of the tires were removed and the damage caused to the runway was repaired, a cleaning and maintenance work that lasted until late at night.
As a consequence of the incident, the north runway remained temporarily closed, which forced all takeoffs and landings to be concentrated on the other operational runway of the airport. Normality in flight operations was restored on Sunday morning.
