The home disasters linked to extreme weather phenomena doubled during the summer of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to an internal study prepared by Mutua Madrileña.
The insurer processed 8,848 claims in the summer months of last year, compared to the 4,274 recorded in the previous year. June 2025 concentrated an unusually high number of incidents related to adverse atmospheric episodes, chaining intense storms, hailstorms, and strong gusts of wind that affected large areas of the national territory.
The most common causes of these claims were hail (47%), rain (29%), and wind (24%). In the case of hail, the damages were mainly located on the exterior of the homes, with breaks in awnings, tiles, roofs, as well as pool covers and garden furniture.
The precipitation caused water leaks in facades and roofs, while the wind particularly impacted awnings, blinds, and various elements of terrace and patio furniture.
By autonomous communities, the disasters related to atmospheric phenomena in the summer months grew with particular intensity in Madrid (166%), Aragón (120%), Navarra (141%), and La Rioja (138%).
If all home disasters are considered, and not just those derived from extreme weather, Mutua Madrileña managed 117,000 incidents between June and September 2025, which represents an increase of 17%.
Thefts rank as the sixth cause of disaster in summer, with a weight of 5.78% of the total. In the last decade, theft-related disasters at Mutua Madrileña have more than tripled, rising from 2,053 cases in 2016 to over 6,600 in the summer of last year.
