The overnight stays registered in hotels in Spain increased by 1.4% in August and surpassed 48.7 million, in a month in which accommodation prices rose by 6.3% and the average revenue per occupied room reached 166.9 euros (+7.3%), according to provisional data from the Hotel Tourism Situation released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The performance of the hotel business showed an uneven evolution depending on the origin of the traveler: while stays of residents in Spain decreased by 1.1%, those of non-resident tourists increased by 2.8%.
In the accumulated period from January to August 2026, the volume of overnight stays increased by 1.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, with advances of 0.4% among domestic clients and 2% in the case of foreigners.
Balearic Islands and Andalusia lead the destinations
Among travelers residing in Spain, Andalusia consolidated itself as the main destination by concentrating 24.4% of the overnight stays in August, followed by Catalonia, with 14.9%, and the Valencian Community, with 12.8% of the total.
In contrast, international visitors primarily opted for the Balearic Islands, which accounted for 33% of all their hotel nights.
Catalonia (20.6%) and the Canary Islands (18.2%) ranked second and third in the preferences of foreign tourism.
If we analyze the tourist areas, the Island of Mallorca concentrated the highest number of stays, exceeding 8.5 million. Likewise, Barcelona, Madrid, and Calvià appeared as the tourist points with the most overnight stays.
By origin of the travelers, tourists from the United Kingdom and Germany led international demand by contributing 25.5% and 14.5% of the hotel nights of non-residents in August, respectively. Following them were France (11.1%), Italy (6.2%), and the Netherlands (4.8%).
Average occupancy of 76.1% and peaks of 98% in Muro
During August, 76.1% of the available hotel beds in the country were occupied, which represents an increase of 1.1% compared to August 2025.
On weekends, the occupancy rate by beds increased by 0.9%, reaching 76.9%.
The Balearic Islands recorded the highest average occupancy by beds, at 90.3%. By areas, Palma-Calvià led the occupancy (91.5%) and the Island of Mallorca was at the forefront during the weekend (89.6%).
In the municipal area, the destination with the highest occupancy percentage was Muro (98.2%), while Blanes stood out on weekends with 97.8%.
Hotel prices rise by 6.3%
The Hotel Price Index (IPH) recorded a year-on-year increase of 6.3% in August, according to figures from the statistical agency.
By autonomous communities and cities, the most intense increase occurred in the Autonomous City of Ceuta (17.6%), while the Community of Madrid recorded the most significant drop (-3.3%).
By categories, the largest increase corresponded to two and three-star silver establishments, with a rise of 8.6%.
Regarding profitability indicators, the average revenue of hotels per occupied room (ADR) stood at 166.9 euros, which implies a rise of 7.3% compared to August 2025.
The average daily income per available room (RevPAR) advanced by 7% and reached 133.1 euros.
By categories, the ADR reached 357.8 euros in five-star hotels, 176.7 euros in four-star hotels, and 145 euros in three-star hotels. The RevPAR for these segments was 273.0, 150.8, and 117.9 euros, respectively.
The Málaga municipality of Estepona recorded both the highest ADR and the highest RevPAR in Spain, with 418 and 359.4 euros, respectively.
