The general secretary of UGT, Pepe Álvarez, has expressed his sorrow over the death of Maricarmen Abascal, whose eviction order of September 23 triggered the protests in defense of the right to housing that continue today in numerous squares across the country. The union leader has linked her death to the system that allowed her to be expelled from her home.

"Maricarmen has died. Due to the cruelty of a system that threw her out of her house and left her on the street, sick," the UGT leader indicated in a message from his X account.

In that same publication, Álvarez has urged citizens to mobilize and occupy the streets "from anger and pain" as a tribute to Maricarmen and on behalf of the "tens of thousands" of people to whom "a home is denied."

"Neither houses without people nor people without houses," concludes the message from the general secretary of UGT.

The Tenants' Union has confirmed the death of Maricarmen, who had become a reference in the fight for housing and whose situation led to the camping at Puerta del Sol and other gatherings in different parts of the country. The woman had been hospitalized at Gregorio Marañón hospital since she was transferred on a stretcher after the eviction order that removed her from her home was executed.
