The Almaraz nuclear power plant has reiterated its commitment to continue operating in a "safe," "reliable," "efficient" manner and maintaining the "high standards" that place it among the "best plants in the world," after receiving this Friday the ministerial order that extends its operating permit until the year 2030.
In a statement, the facility explained that this renewal takes into account the favorable report issued on July 16 by the Nuclear Safety Council, which certifies that the plant meets the necessary conditions to continue operating safely until that date.
According to Centrales Nucleares Almaraz-Trillo, the resolution from the Ministry for Ecological Transition represents a "recognition" of the work carried out by the professional team at the plant and the "permanent investment effort" aimed at the "improvement of its safety, updating, and technological modernization."
The company has insisted on its willingness to continue operating the Almaraz plant in a "safe, reliable, efficient" manner and preserving the "high standards" that place it among the "best plants in the world," as endorsed by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).
Centrales Nucleares Almaraz-Trillo reminds that Almaraz is an "essential infrastructure" that provides more than 7 percent of the electricity consumed in Spain, equivalent to the supply for 4 million households, thanks to the "work and commitment" of about 4,000 people who carry out their work in and for the plant in its area of influence, along with another 1,200 during each refueling outage.
The plant is considered the "main socioeconomic engine" of its surroundings and one of the largest industries in Extremadura, generating "stable and highly qualified" employment and acting as a lever for other industrial activities in the region.
Classified at level 1 of excellence in the nuclear industry by WANO, the plant also has a "rigorous system" of supervision supported by internal audits and independent external reviews.
"With an annual investment of 50 million euros for the improvement, updating, and modernization of its equipment, the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant is in the best technical conditions to continue operating as the North Anna Plant (Virginia, USA) does, a "twin" plant of Almaraz, which has obtained the operating license for 80 years," it has pointed out.
Almaraz-Trillo Nuclear Power Plants also emphasizes that the continuity of Almaraz until 2030 is framed within the "strategic line" of the European Union, which advocates for the maintenance of nuclear power plants in operation to reinforce the security and energy autonomy of the bloc, by contributing to the European electrical grid a "firm and synchronous source such as nuclear energy."
