The Minister of Economy and Finance, Elmer Cuba, has pointed out that Peru has room this year to achieve economic growth of up to 4%, despite the impact that the phenomenon of "El Niño" is generating, responsible for altering climate patterns and hitting the primary sector hard.
During an interview granted to "Latina Televisión", he detailed that GDP expansion would be in a range of between 3.5% and 4%, even when "El Niño" is already weighing down the pace of activity. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the poverty rate would maintain a downward trajectory.
In his forecasts, Cuba pointed out that fishing and exports will, in particular, be the areas most affected by "El Niño". However, he stressed that both sectors will show a recovery starting from the next fiscal year. "Peru could indeed grow next year more than this year," he emphasized.
The economic official has also indicated that the Government of Keiko Fujimori will implement a gradual increase in the minimum wage of about 170 dollars (43.57 euros), with the aim of avoiding additional pressures on inflation. The plan includes increases of 100 soles (25.63 euros) between October and November 2026 and 70 soles (17.94 euros) between this November and April 2027.
