Telecom Italia (TIM) is reinforcing its sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure through a strategic alliance with Nvidia, with the aim of providing Italian companies, public administrations, startups, and research centers with advanced capabilities to create and deploy large-scale AI applications within the country.

The company has explained that the new AI platform will be developed by TIM Enterprise and will be fully hosted in Italy, combining the centralized cloud and the group's distributed infrastructure with Nvidia's complete AI infrastructure suite, in order to provide state-of-the-art computing power.

TIM Enterprise acts as the corporate services and digital transformation division of the TIM group.

"By combining our infrastructure with Nvidia's accelerated computing and AI technologies, TIM is building a platform in Italy that can support businesses, the Public Administration, and innovators in developing AI applications from the cloud to the edge," said TIM's CEO, Pietro Labriola.

In addition, TIM Enterprise will make managed services available for open and adaptable models, including the Nvidia Nemotron family, so that customers can host, fine-tune, evaluate, and operate these models directly on the platform.

Organizations will have the ability to tailor open models to their own language, sector knowledge, and internal workflows, benefiting at the same time from greater transparency, control, and cost optimization, and applying programmable controls and policies through Nvidia NeMo Guardrails.

The platform will also support the hosting, evaluation, and operation of specialized models generated by Italian universities, research centers, companies, and native AI firms, with the aim of fostering an open and competitive national ecosystem.

This commitment is integrated into TIM's roadmap to gradually expand AI processing capacity from the centralized cloud to the distributed edge, bringing accelerated computing closer to the points where data is generated and consumed.

In the context of the Important Project of Common European Interest on Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS), the operator is deploying 'edge cloud' nodes in different locations in Italy, equipped with Nvidia GPUs and designed for applications that require low latency.
