The technical coordinator of the Rehabilitation and Physical Disability Area of the care entity Clariane, Paola García, has pointed out the need for those who have gone through a stroke to undergo a recovery process, considering that "it is important that people who have suffered a stroke go to rehabilitation because there are high probabilities of recovery".

Coinciding with the commemoration this Thursday, October 29, of World Stroke Day, the Comprehensive Neurorehabilitation Care Center (CIAN Madrid), belonging to Grupo 5, has released the testimony of Luis, a patient in full neurorehabilitation who wants to highlight the constant work involved in rebuilding oneself after brain damage.

"I suffered a stroke: you get through that", Luis has assured, who has had to face one of the main causes of disability in Spain and who has wanted to convey a message of encouragement and realism to those living a similar situation. "My father got through it, my girl got through it, I know more people who have got through it", he has emphasized.

Adapt expectations and rely on an expert team

After the initial impact of acquired brain damage, the rehabilitation itinerary requires readjusting expectations, accepting that the effort will be intense, and having the support of a specialized professional team. In this framework, CIAN Madrid, once the acute phase of the stroke has been overcome, launches intensive and personalized neurorehabilitation programs, aimed at achieving functional goals that have a direct impact on each patient's daily life.

To achieve these objectives, the center combines state-of-the-art intervention techniques with close and ongoing support, assuming that recovery does not progress in a linear way, but as a process prolonged over time. "Neurorehabilitation is a long-distance race", has explained the center's physiotherapist, Natalia Sancho, who has added that "that day comes when a little tiny change manages to give enough energy to continue the treatment".

Neurorehabilitation thus makes it possible to rethink the concept of personal autonomy, focusing on what restores dignity and quality of life in daily activities. "Now, it is costing me more, twice as much as before, but in two or three months, I will manage to walk or not, and I don't care", Luis has expressed, for whom "being a little independent" is enough.
