Més per Menorca has registered in the Parliament the request for the appearance of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, with the aim of providing public explanations "in light of the Government's inability to protect and safeguard the natural spaces of Menorca".
The Menorcan formation has emphasized in a statement that during this summer unauthorized private activities have been detected on the Isle of Aire and in the dune system of Mongofre, integrated into the Natural Park of s'Albufera des Grau, in addition to massive anchoring over posidonia meadows in the surroundings of the Isle of Aire, a site protected by the figure of Natural Reserve.
The party considers it "essential" that the regional Executive clarifies "why it has not been able to prevent these events" and demands that all available documentation on these "serious events" be made public, as well as the adoption of urgent and effective measures "to prevent episodes like these from happening again".
The spokesperson for Més per Menorca in the regional Chamber, Josep Castells, has defended the need for the appearance "due to the seriousness and accumulation of similar events throughout the summer" and has stated that "they are a demonstration of the Government's incompetence to protect the natural spaces of Menorca".
"We must put an end to the feeling of impunity that some have, and the Government must put all the resources it has at its disposal to prevent a few from disobeying the law, degrading and damaging our territory," the deputy has pointed out.
In parallel, Castells has registered several control initiatives in the Parliament in order to clarify how the Administration has acted in each of these episodes and what steps it plans to take to repair the possible environmental damage caused.
For Més per Menorca, everything that has happened "evidences that the current mechanisms for monitoring and controlling the natural spaces of Menorca are not sufficient".
For this reason, the formation demands that the Government increase the staff of environmental agents and other surveillance bodies, review the signage and information on prohibitions and access restrictions to these sites, and promote "strong measures to prevent situations like those experienced this summer from happening again".
