A fire has almost completely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle's Nest, an old retreat used by the Nazi leadership, including the dictator Adolf Hitler, located in the southeastern tip of Bavaria, very close to the border with Austria.

The flames originated on Friday night and the Police are investigating the incident as a possible arson. In fact, a suspect has already been arrested, according to the German public television ARD.

According to sources cited by the DPA agency, the arrested individual is a motorcyclist who encountered the emergency teams after the fire broke out. The suspect, a man from the area, suffered injuries and remains hospitalized.

The Eagle's Nest, a name given to it by the Allies during World War II, receives thousands of tourists each year. The building was constructed in 1938 at an altitude of about 1,800 meters and served as a place where Hitler received diplomats and other foreign guests.

An important part of its international notoriety comes from its appearance in numerous American war films shot after the end of the conflict.
